What Happens to Your Solar System During a Power Outage?

Image
A power outage can be confusing for homeowners with solar panels. Seeing sunlight on the roof does not necessarily mean the home will continue receiving electricity when the utility grid goes down. For most grid-tied solar systems, the system is designed to shut down during an outage unless compatible battery backup equipment is installed. This behavior is an important safety feature and helps protect utility workers who may be repairing power lines. Why Does a Grid-Tied Solar System Shut Down? A standard grid-tied solar system operates in connection with the utility grid. Electricity generated by the panels can supply the home, while excess electricity may flow to the grid depending on the system and utility arrangement. During a grid outage, the solar system detects that the utility connection is unavailable. The system then stops supplying electricity through the normal grid connection. This prevents solar equipment from sending power onto lines that utility crews may assume are de-...
